About Our Ticks & Mosquitos Program

Ticks and mosquitoes can spread diseases to people and animals. NNPHD conducts seasonal surveillance to better understand which species of ticks and mosquitoes are in our area and whether disease-causing pathogens are circulating. We also provide education and prevention resources to the public

What We Do

Mosquito Surveillance

We trap mosquitoes in our health district that are identified and tested for certain pathogens like West Nile virus.

Tick Surveillance

We collect ticks which are identified and tested for pathogens such as the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

Public Education

We provide information about bite prevention, tick removal, standing water reduction, and symptoms of tick- and mosquito-borne diseases.

Prevention Supplies

Free DEET wipes, mosquito dunks, and tick removal kits available at our office.

Diseases Spread by Ticks and Mosquitoes

Tick-borne illnesses

Tick-borne illnesses reported in the region may include ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and Lyme disease

Mosquito-borne illnesses

West Nile virus is the primary mosquito-borne illness monitored in Nebraska. However, additional pathogens are tested for in mosquito samples such as St. Louis Encephalitis Virus and Western Equine Encephalitis Virus.
