STI Information & Prevention

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) — sometimes called sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) — are infections passed from one person to another through sexual contact. STIs are common and treatable. Most serious consequences can be prevented through early testing and treatment.

Common STIs

Chlamydia

A common bacterial STI that often has no symptoms. It can be cured with antibiotics. Untreated chlamydia may cause serious reproductive health problems in men and women.

Gonorrhea

A bacterial STI that can affect the genital, rectum, and throat. It often has no symptoms and can be cured with the correct antibiotics.

Syphilis

A bacterial STI that develops in stages and can cause serious health problems if untreated. It is curable with the correct antibiotics.

HIV

A virus that affects the immune system. With effective treatment, people can live long, healthy lives. People who maintain an undetectable viral load do not sexually transmit HIV, known as U=U.

HPV

A very common viral STI. Some types can cause genital warts, while others can cause certain cancers. Vaccination can prevent many HPV-related cancers.

Herpes (HSV)

A very common viral STI that can cause sores or blisters. There is no cure, but medication can reduce symptoms and the chance of transmission.

Prevention Strategies

  • Vaccines: HPV vaccine prevents HPV-related cancers; Hepatitis B vaccine prevents Hepatitis B
  • Condoms & barriers: Significantly reduce risk of most STIs when used correctly
  • PrEP: Pre-exposure prophylaxis — daily medication for HIV prevention (very effective)
  • PEP: Post-exposure prophylaxis — emergency medication within 72 hours of HIV exposure
  • Regular testing: Know your status. Many STIs have no symptoms
  • Mutual monogamy: With a partner who has been tested and is negative
  • Open communication: Talk with partners about sexual health

Who Should Be Tested?

Everyone ages 13-64 should be tested for HIV at least once. More frequent HIV and STI testing may be recommended based on age, pregnancy, sexual activity, symptoms, partners, and possible exposures. Talk with a healthcare provider or contact NNPHD to learn what testing is right for you.

Free and confidential testing is available. NNPHD can connect you with local testing resources and clinics. Call (402) 375-2200 for confidential assistance.
