About Environmental Health

Environmental health focuses on the ways our surroundings can affect our health. NNPHD provides swimming pool inspections, private well-water testing resources, local air-quality monitoring, and education about environmental health concerns. We can connect residents and businesses with the appropriate Nebraska agencies for permits, licensing, and regulatory services.

Private Well Testing

Nebraska’s rural residents often depend on private wells for drinking water. Private wells are not regulated by the EPA or state public water systems, so regular testing is the homeowner’s responsibility. We recommend testing your well water annually for:

  • Bacteria (coliform) — especially after flooding or heavy rainfall
  • Nitrates — important if you have infants or are pregnant
  • pH and hardness
  • Pesticides if you are in an agricultural area

Water test kits and sampling instructions are available at our office. Results are typically returned within 5–7 business days.

Air Quality Monitoring

The Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department now has a PurpleAir sensor! This sensor, mounted to the outside of our building, collects readings that allow for real-time air quality data shown below.
