Water Quality

Do You Have Your Own Well?

If you rely on a private well for drinking water, regular testing is essential to ensure it’s safe and free from harmful contaminants. It is recommended that you test your well water at least once per year for common pollutants. Early detection can prevent health risks and protect the well-being of those drinking the water. NNPHD does not currently have test kits at our office, but you can contact Central District Health Department to request a test kit.

For more information on testing your private well please contact Central District Health Department at 308-385-5175 or email

Nitrates

Nitrates are a common contaminant found in drinking water, particularly in rural areas of Nebraska, where agricultural activities can contribute to higher levels. Nitrates are not harmful to most adults in small amounts, but they can post serious health risks to infants under six months of age, leading to a condition known as "blue baby syndrome". To reduce exposure to nitrates, it's important for residents to test their well water often and follow guidelines regarding safe nitrate levels. If nitrate levels exceed safe limits, using a water treatment system such as reverse osmosis filters can help make the water safer for drinking. It's important to note that boiling the water when the nitrate level exceeds the safe limit will not remove the nitrates.
